Background
Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase, receptor type M (PTPRM), also called PTPμ, PTPRμ, and RPTPμ, is expressed at highest levels in pulmonary vascular epithelia, where interactions with cadhedrins are believed to be important in regulating barrier permeability. The MAM and Fibronectin III (FNIII) domains on the extracellular side of PTPRM bind between cells, affecting adhesion and contact inhibition. Culturing cells to high density concentrates PTPRM at sites of tight contact and induces proteolytic cleavage of the 100 kDa extracellular domain.
