Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) are a heterogeneous population of cells of myeloid origin that includes immature granulocytes, immature macrophages, and immature dendritic cells. In healthy individuals, these immature cells generated in the bone marrow differentiate into mature granulocytes, macrophages or dendritic cells. In pathological conditions, such as cancer, inflammation and infection, these immature state cells have the ability to potently suppress T cell and NK cell responses. 

Interest in understanding of MDSC biology and clinical applications of MDSC has drastically increased in recent years. Although tremendous progress has been made in defining the MDSC biology, further characterization, a comprehensive understanding of MDSCs and their function will be necessary, in developing potential therapeutic targets that are involved in MDSC production and their immunosuppressive function.
