Rit1 is a member of the Ras-related small GTPase superfamily. The 219 amino acid, 25 kDa human Rit1 is a cytoplasmic cell membrane-associated protein that is expressed in most tissues. It is widely expressed in the developing and adult nervous systems and participates in NGF-induced axon outgrowth. Rit1 forms complexes with other small GTPases, such as cdc42 and Rac1, that are important during cell growth and polarity. Human Rit1 shares 95% amino acid identity with mouse and rat Rit1.
