Background | PON1 (aka Paraoxonase-1) is an arylesterase, mainly hydrolyzing paroxon to produce p-nitrophenol. Paroxon is an organophosphorus anticholinesterase compound that is produced in the body by oxidation of parathion. Polymorphisms in PON1 are a risk factor in coronary artery disease and are also the required enzyme for clopidogrel bioactivation, with its common Q192R polymorphism determining the rate of active metabolite formation. |
