Background
IL-31 is a 25 kDa, unique member of the short chain group of alpha -helical cytokines. It is produced by activated T cells, particularly the Th2 CD4+ phenotype. Mouse IL‑31 cDNA encodes a 163 amino acid (aa) precursor that contains a 22 aa signal sequence and a 141 aa mature region. IL-31 signals through a receptor complex composed of IL-31 receptor A and Oncostatin M receptor. Mature mouse IL‑31 shares 25% aa sequence identity with mature human IL-31 and 44% aa sequence identity with a rat IL-31-like protein.
