GnRHR is a Releasing-Hormone Receptor activated by gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). This receptor plays a major role in the regulation of reproductive functions. It modulates the synthesis and secretion of gonadotropin hormones such as luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) from the pituitary. In turn, LH and FSH regulate the release of steroid hormones from the gonads. Mutations in GnRHR have been linked to hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, a condition characterized by absence or delayed puberty and retarded bone maturation. GnRHR has been reported to be expressed mostly in the pituitary gonadotropes and in reproductive organs, including ovary, placenta, prostate, testis, and uterus. It is also expressed in breast, heart, kidney, liver, skeletal muscle, and thymus. No human ESTs have been isolated for this receptor.
