I want to carry out a research using cystatin c to determine GFR in sickle cell anemia patients. Can pin prick sample be used? What is the procedure to carry out the test?
- The cystatin C ELISA kits we sell are manufactured by two companies, Abnova and Biosensis, and distributed by us here at Novus Biologicals. I contacted both companies to ask them your question. I have now heard back from Biosensis, who produce the product catalog # BEK-2145-2P. Their answer was as follows: We haven't used our kit with such samples; however, a recent paper suggests that it could be possible. The paper used a different method than traditional ELISA, but if the samples were allowed to clot or collected in citrated tubes it certainly seems possible to use such samples, but the customer will have to investigate on their own the true effectiveness compared to traditional blood sample collection, for which the kit is tested. Here is a link to the paper examining capillary tube collection (https://academic.oup.com/clinchem/article/51/5/903/5629843) These people even have a patent on using the technology for the measure of cystatin C for human samples (http://helierscientific.co.uk/renalfunction.html) so that too might be an issue for your customer. Finally, this paper too probably should be reviewed by your customer; it is more modern and discusses a number of approaches and issues (https://journals.lww.com/cjasn/pages/articleviewer.aspx?year=2009&issue=11000&article=00029&type=Fulltext) Just to let you know that I have now heard from Abnova, the manufacturer of our cystatin C ELISA kits product catalog # KA0022 (protocol: http://www.abnova.com/protocol_pdf/KA0022.pdf) and catalog # KA2107 (protocol: http://www.abnova.com/protocol_pdf/KA2107.pdf). Their response was simply that neither of the kits have been tested on pin-prick blood samples, and so they are not sure whether these kits are suitable or not.
