Viral Meningitis: Disease Bioinformatics

Meningitis causes inflammation of the meninges which is the protective membranes surrounding the in the brain and spinal cord. The inflammation is caused by an infection in the fluid surrounding the brain or spinal. Many different types of viruses lead to meningitis and they cause the most cases of meningitis. Symptoms of viral meningitis are fever, neck stiffness, light sensitivity, and nausea. Since antibiotics cannot treat viruses, viral meningitis usually goes untreated, with some drugs prescribed to ease the symptoms. Viral meningitis typically leaves no lasting effects, but studies show that short-term memory loss and attention deficit disorder can be caused by viral meningitis. Viral meningitis has no vaccines, so to prevent being infected, good hygiene is important.
