Tuberculosis: Disease Bioinformatics

Tuberculosis is a bacterial infection caused by the Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria. Tuberculosis is transmitted through the air from person to person, and is therefore contagious. The two major forms of the disease are Latent TB Infection and TB Disease. Latent TB Infection occurs when an individual is infected by breathing in a Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria, but the body is able to suppress the bacteria and prevent further growth. Individuals with Latent TB Infection do not exhibit symptoms and are not contagious, but can become symptomatic and contagious if the bacteria become active. TB Disease is the active form of tuberculosis, and common symptoms include a severe cough, chest pain, coughing up blood, weakness, fever, and weight loss. Treatment for tuberculosis includes six to nine months of several drugs, such as isonaizid, rifampin, ethambutol, and pyrazinamide. Tuberculosis is diagnosed through a TB skin test or a blood test, and individuals with Latent TB Infection and TB Disease should seek treatment to prevent further spread of the disease.
