Endosomes are membrane-bound vesicles that are formed via endocytosis. Endocytosis involves invagination of the plasma membrane to encircle a substance and budding to release the vesicle. Endosomes function to either transport substances between different portions of the external cell membrane, the latter of which is essential for epithelial cells whose polarity differs on each side of the membrane.
