Dendritic cells are antigen presenting cells (APCs) with the ability to initiate naive T cell responses to cognate antigen. They are classified based on the expression patterns of cell surface markers into dermal-derived, lymphoid-derived, myeloid-derived and plasmacytoid dendritic cells. Dendritic cells function in coordinating T cell activation, depending on the type of dendritic cell presenting antigen and the physiological conditions in which T cell interactions take place. Dendritic cells also play a role in the differentiation of regulatory T cells and development of T cell tolerance.
