Background
TRPV1, a ligand-gated cation channel expressed in peripheral nociceptors, induces pain when activated by capsaicin. TRPV1 affects the inhibitory control of neurons by integrating multiple noxious signals, which is critical in chronic pain. Blocking TRPV1 is becoming a more common approach to suppression of pathological pain. When inflammation is present, TRPV1 causes an itch response. Dietary salt content can affect the concentration and activity of TRPV1, which in turn can affect kidney activities resulting in renin regulation. TRPV1 is also critically involved in thermal activation and detection of infrared radiation. Finally, TRPV1 is dysfunctional in hypertrophic hearts.
