Submit your event on Peroxisome Markers to be featured.
Peroxisomes are eukaryotic organelles that function in metabolism and the clearing of toxic substances via oxidative enzymes. Structurally, peroxisomes are bound by a single membrane that separates contents from the cytosol. Proteins and enzymes destined for peroxisomes are synthesized in the cytosol and each contain a peroxisomal targeting signal (PTS). PTS binds a receptor molecule that takes the protein into the peroxisome and then returns for another load. In contrast to lysosomes, peroxisomes bud off of the endoplasmic reticulum, not the Golgi apparatus.
