Description
The TMC1 gene codes a 760 amino acid long, 87 kDA transmembrane channel-like protein 1 that is critical for the function of cochlear hair cells. The specific role of this gene, however, is unknown. This gene is known to interact with genes PRKAA1, MAP1LC3B, GABARAPL2, and NSMAF. Defects in the TMC1 gene cause deafness autosomal dominant type 36 and type 7. Additionally, it has been linked to nonsyndromic deafness, hearing loss, sensorineural hearing loss, megacolon, and enlarged vestibular aqueducts.
