Monocyte Chemoattractant Protein 1 in Immune System Response

Fri, 11/16/2012 - 14:29

MCP1, also known as CCL2, is a small chemokine factor belonging to the CC chemokine family. It is predominantly produced by endothelial cells and macrophages, and specifically is a chemoattractant for monocytes and basophils. It is produced by a wide range of cell types in reaction to diverse inflammatory stimuli including tissue injury, infection, and inflammation. A comprehensive chemokine antibody membrane array analysis of normal, rhematoid arthritis (RA), and osteoarthritis (OA) patients relied upon MCP 1 antibodies as a primary screen before chemotaxis screening (1).

Another autoimmune disorder, that of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), is suitable for nephritic performance monitoring using a MCP 1 antibody clinical diagnostic test (2). Additionally, a group at Johns Hopkins examined serum antibody levels in ovarian carcinoma patients using a panel of antibodies including the MCP 1 antibody, and found increased levels of IL5, MCP1, MIP1, and TNF alpha associated with high grade and advanced disease (3).  Studies with MCP 1 antibody in established HER2/Neu carcinomas also demonstrated that multiple pathways, including that of MCP1, are required for Neu transformation (4). Burgess, et. al. have also found that soluble factors like CCL2 and CXCL2 are upregulated in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and play a more important role than physical interactions (5).
