Rheumatic Heart Disease: Disease Bioinformatics

Stemming from Rheumatic Fever, Rheumatic Heart Disease is a chronic heart condition. Rheumatic Fever is a disease that develops from an infection with A Streptococcus bacteria and can affect many parts of the body including the heart, joints, and brain. Infections with these bacteria begin as strep throat or scarlet fever and evolve into Rheumatic Fever if they are not treated. Most common in children between the ages of 5 to 15, Rheumatic Heart Disease is caused by the improper treatment or recurrence of Rheumatic Fever. Rheumatic Heart Disease is usually treated with surgery to repair or replace heart valves. Because of the common occurrence in developing countries, access to medical procedures is limited; subsequently, many children die of Rheumatic Heart Disease each year.
