Heart failure occurs when the heart is unable to provide sufficient blood flow to meet the need of the body. This can cause many symptoms including shortness of breath, leg swelling, and inability to exercise. Heart failure is diagnosed by a physical examination and can be confirmed with an echocardiography. Treatment depends on severity and cause of heart failure. In a less severe condition, treatments include light exercise, dietary changes, smoking cessation, and medications. In more serious cases, heart failure is treated with implant devices or occasionally a heart transplant.
