Description
BMPs (bone morphogenetic proteins) belong to the TGF beta superfamily of structurally related signaling proteins. Members of this superfamily are widely represented throughout the animal kingdom and have been implicated in a variety of developmental processes. BMP2 and 4 are members of the TGF-beta family, consisting of disulfide-linked homodimers. Both interact with GREM2 and SOSTDC1 and induce bone and cartilage formation. BMP4 also acts in mesoderm induction, tooth development, limb formation and fracture repair.
