The nervous system contains receptors located on sensory neurons that are specific for a variety of stimulus to help detect our surrounding environment. This "sensory system" is composed of processing systems for visual, auditory, olfactory and gustatory sensation. Mammalian sense of smell relies on chemoreceptors to detect ions or molecules in the environment, while vision relies on photoreceptors and pain perception is transmitted by nociceptors. Furthermore, the stimuli sensed by these receptors is sent to the appropriate region of the sensory cortex to be further processed.
