Panniculitis is a condition that causes inflammation of the fatty layer beneath the epidermis, usually in the shins, calves, and thighs. Symptoms of panniculitis include the appearance of nodules in the fatty layer beneath the skin, fever, nausea and vomiting, weight loss, and fatigue. Panniculitis can be caused by inflammatory diseases, viral or bacterial infections, sarcoidosis, some medicines, and leukemia. Often, individuals with panniculitis recover on their own after about six weeks but have recurring incidents of the disease. There is no cure for panniculitis, but doctors can relieve symptoms by treating the underlying cause or by using anti-inflammatory pain killers.
