An intraventricular brain hemorrhage is characterized by a bleeding into the brain’s ventricles, where the cerebrospinal fluid is created. The majority of cases of an intraventricular brain hemorrhage occur in premature infants, who have an immature circulatory system that can lead to swelling and the breakdown of weak blood vessels. The disorder can occur in adults as well, as the result of a very serious brain injury that usually comes with other associated damage. Symptoms of an intraventricular brain hemorrhage include apnea and bradycardia, seizures, anemia, and swelling of the soft spots on the infants head. There is currently no specific treatment for an intraventricular brain tumor, although diuretic therapy, streptokinase therapy and lumbar punctures have all been used, but there is still a very high mortality rate associated with this disorder.
